The short answer

A DEXA scan is useful for almost anyone who wants to know what their weight is made of—especially people losing weight, GLP-1 medication users, athletes, strength trainees and anyone tracking long-term health.

  • Weight-loss clients: track fat loss separately from muscle loss.
  • GLP-1 users: monitor lean mass during rapid weight loss. Read more
  • Strength training: measure real muscle gain over time.
  • Athletes and endurance athletes: monitor lean mass distribution and left/right balance across training phases.
  • Body recomposition: see fat loss and muscle gain even when the scale barely moves. Read more
  • General health tracking: establish a reliable baseline for fat, muscle and bone.

Who should not get a DEXA scan?

DEXA scans are not performed during pregnancy. If you recently had a barium study or an imaging test with contrast, let us know when you book, because it can interfere with results. Colorado also requires medical authorization before DEXA imaging—Body Fat USA handles that for you.
