See how your body composition changes during weight loss, beyond the number on the scale.

If you are taking a GLP-1 medication, a DEXA scan can provide a baseline and follow-up measurements of fat mass and lean soft tissue. Bring your reports to the professional managing your care to discuss the changes in context.

What your scan can show

  • Total and regional fat mass, lean soft tissue and body fat percentages.
  • How the same measurements compare with your next scan.
  • Arm, leg and trunk composition to discuss with your care team.
Lean tissue is not the same as skeletal muscle. It includes water, organs and other non-fat soft tissue. Hydration and preparation can affect the result. Our GE Lunar Prodigy does not provide a direct visceral fat measurement. A scan alone cannot tell you whether a medication or treatment plan is right for you.

Build a useful baseline and follow-up

A scan before or early in treatment can serve as a baseline. If you have already started, your first scan can still be a reference for future comparisons. Choose the repeat interval with your treating professional based on your goals and expected changes.

For comparisons, use the same scanner and similar meal, hydration, exercise and time-of-day conditions. Small differences may reflect measurement variation. Read our preparation guide.

Would an RMR test help?

A $100 RMR test measures resting calorie use through indirect calorimetry. The $175 DEXA + RMR appointment takes about 30 minutes. RMR is a resting measurement; activity and total daily calorie needs remain estimates. It does not prescribe a calorie deficit or diagnose the cause of a plateau.

See sample DEXA report excerpts and our RMR results explanation before you book.

Can a scan prevent muscle loss?

No. A scan measures body composition; it does not prevent tissue loss. It can support a discussion about trends with your care team. Lean tissue changes cannot be interpreted as muscle changes alone.

Do I need to be taking a GLP-1 medication?

No. The same full-body DEXA service is available whether or not you take medication.

Does the scan diagnose osteoporosis?

No. Whole-body bone measurements in a body composition report are not a diagnostic hip or spine examination.
